The Benefits of Facial Acupressure and How to Do It

There are two ways to look at your skincare routine: It’s either a) the chore you’re often tempted to skip or b) a few minutes of much-needed me-time. If you’re looking to get from point A to B, you might need to up your routine’s zen factor a tad. Filling your routine with dreamy textures and results-driven products you’re excited to use is important, yes, but so is making sure the overall experience is soothing and enjoyable—the perfect start to your day or wind down before bed.

Stemming from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupressure has been used for thousands of years for tension relief and relaxation. And because reducing stress has a ripple effect on a healthier complexion (we’re talking fewer breakouts and less inflammation), it can be really good for your skin, too. Read how to do facial acupressure at home below.

What is Facial Acupressure?

Sometimes explained as “acupuncture without the needles”, acupressure is an ancient TCM practice where pressure is applied to specific areas of the body known as acupoints. According to practitioners, these points aren’t random; they correspond to our internal meridian system—or channels of energy (called chi or qi)—to rebalance the body.

While there isn’t scientific evidence to back up this belief system, some do report that physically pressing down on these specific points can relieve jaw tension, soothe headaches, reduce undereye puffiness, or at the very least, feel pretty relaxing.

How to Do Facial Acupressure At-Home

If you want a professional acupressure session, you can reach out to an acupuncturist, massage therapist, or similar TCM practitioner. You can also perform acupressure yourself at home.

Facial acupressure, specifically, is a simple practice that can be done anywhere, anytime—although, we recommend performing it as the final step (before sunscreen) in your skincare routine AM and/or PM. It takes just a few minutes and can be done using a zamac Facial Acupressure Wand (like the one included in our limited-edition Skin-Destressing Gift Set) or just your fingertips. If you’re focusing on puffiness, try popping your tool in the fridge beforehand. The cool temperature improves blood circulation, which helps reduce inflammation and swelling.

Ready to relax? Follow our step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Once all your skincare products are applied (we recommend after our Advanced Night Cream or Antioxidant Oil-Serum), wash your hands thoroughly. If you have one, grab a Facial Acupressure Wand.

Step 2: Start at your third eye (the space between your eyebrows) and, using light to medium pressure, massage this pressure point with your wand for three seconds.

Step 3: Continue to massage each of the highlighted pressure points (the upper lip, cheekbones, side of the jaw, brow bone, and temples) in three-second increments, moving outwards from the center of your face.

Step 4: For extra relaxation, take a deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth every time you massage an acupoint.

Step 5: Repeat the process three times or as often as you’d like.

Step 6: Cleanse your tool with warm water and soap and pat dry. To up its cooling sensation, store in the fridge.
