This Is What Happens to Your Skin When You Don’t Get Enough Sleep

No matter how many times we’re told about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep (and if you need a reminder, read this), sometimes it just doesn’t happen. Stress, alcohol, caffeine, between the sheets Instagram scrolling, your inconsiderate (and loud) roommate... There are a myriad of factors that keep us from getting our solid eight hours. Besides feeling groggy and just plain cranky, a lack of shut-eye can have detrimental effects on our skin, too. As if you needed yet another reason to fix your sleeping habits, keep scrolling for all the ways running on zero sleep impacts your skin.

Dark Circles and Under Eye Bags

Two tell tale signs of a bad night’s sleep? Dark circles and under eye bags. When you don’t get enough sleep, your blood vessels dilate, leading to excess fluid being stored in the undereye area. Since the skin around your eyes is thin, this causes dark circles to appear and eyes to become puffy.

How to Fix It:

If you know you’re not going to get a good night’s sleep (perhaps from taking a red-eye flight or working overtime), keep an eye cream handy.
