What Is Skin Dullness?
Dullness is pretty much the opposite of glowing skin. Dull skin looks lackluster, tired, and pretty blah overall. What Causes Uneven Skin Tone and Hyperpigmentation?
There are many causes for a dull, uneven skin tone. First of all, everyone’s skin tone (along with texture and type) is unique. Some people are more prone to hyperpigmentation than others. A lack of exfoliation can also contribute to a buildup of dead skin cells that sit on top of the skin, causing a dull complexion. Aging skin tends to become dull and speckled with age spots too since our cellular turnover rate (how our bodies push fresh, new skin cells to the surface) slows down as we grow older. To help combat a slow cellular turnover rate, incorporate retinol into your routine. Popping and picking at pimples, sun damage, pregnancy, conditions like melasma, and more can also contribute to a dull, uneven skin tone.

If you’re hyper-focused on evening out tone or treating dark spots, exfoliation is key. There are two types of exfoliators you can use (or, for best results, alternate both): Physical exfoliation and chemical exfoliation. Chemical exfoliation refers to acids, such as AHAs and BHAs. AHAs (like glycolic, citric, azelaic, and lactic acid) work at the surface level to dissolve dead skin cells. No matter which type of exfoliation you choose, make sure you don’t overdo it, which can stress the skin out and cause issues like acne and inflammation.
