The Benefits of a Face Moisturizer
Whether your complexion is perpetually dry or on the oilier side, all skin types need to moisturize. Our moisture barrier, the outer layer of the skin, not only keeps skin soft and smooth but protects from outside intruders like bacteria, free radicals, and sun damage. Changes in the weather, pollution, and skin pH can all compromise our moisture barrier, leading to skin issues like acne, dryness, and premature aging skin. Even if you’re oily, a lack of moisturization can signal the skin to produce even more oil and shine.
What Is the Best Moisturizer for My Skin Type?
The best moisturizers and facial oils will incorporate ingredients that increase the skin’s natural moisturizing factor over time, strengthening the barrier and keeping the skin texture soft and smooth. Some beneficial moisturizing ingredients include jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid, squalane, sodium hyaluronate, and vitamin E. You’ll find many of these, along with red algae extract, in our Skin Soak Rich Moisture Cream. If you’re oily, acne-prone, or looking for a summertime moisturizer, you may want to opt for a lighter formula that doesn’t weigh down the skin. A moisturizer gel, such as our Dew Point Moisturizing Gel-Cream, has a bouncy texture that leaves skin refreshed, not greasy. Its green tea extract and aloe leaf juice relieve inflammation, redness, and irritation, a plus for breakouts and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. If you’re focused on aging skin (or preventing premature damage) add a night cream to your regimen. Applying a nutrient-rich moisturizer before bedtime supports the skin’s natural repair mode that occurs as we sleep, strengthening the barrier, restoring firmness, and smoothing away crepey texture and fine lines. Microalgae, which prevents the degradation of elastin and collagen, plus fermented purple tea and green coffee extract work together in our Recovery Mode Advanced Night Cream to support aging skin.
Do I Need to Wear Sunscreen Every Day?
Everyone—no matter their skin type or tone—should wear sunscreen every single day, all year round. SPF prevents our skin from sunburn and skin cancer, but it also protects our moisture barrier from damage, which can cause dark spots, lingering acne marks, fine lines, and more. This damage doesn’t just come from the sun either. A good sunscreen formulated with antioxidants, such as our Guards Up Daily Mineral Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 35, will also provide a defense against blue light damage (like from screen time) and pollution. Plus, UV rays can still reach the skin even on cloudy days or when you’re inside (they can penetrate windows!), which is why it’s so important to wear SPF always.
How to Layer Moisturizer and Sunscreen
Moisturizer and sunscreen are the last steps of any skincare routine, sealing in all the other good-for-skin ingredients that come before it and providing a barrier to protect skin from damage. Apply moisturizer after serums, eye care, or any other skincare treatments. Unless you’re following up with a facial oil or SPF, moisturizer should be the final step in your regimen. Warm a peanut-size amount of moisturizer (you can always add more if you’re super dry) between the hands and softly pat onto the skin. Be careful not to rub or pull at the skin, which can cause irritation and accelerate signs of aging. Feel free to massage the product in circular motions, moving up and out from the center of the face, for a lifting boost.
In the AM, apply facial sunscreen after your moisturizer has sunk into the skin. A moisturizer with SPF doesn’t work as well as using sunscreen on its own, as the other ingredients have the power to dilute its efficacy. Use a generous amount, about the size of a quarter, and smooth on the face, neck, and chest. Wait 15 minutes before heading outside and don’t forget to reapply every 2 hours or after getting wet.
