The Benefits of Skincare Treatments
Tools, face masks, spot creams, exfoliators, boosters, facial peels...these are the special treatments that aren’t necessarily a part of your daily regimen but can be incorporated whenever you’re looking for a specific result. That’s because facial treatments are usually more intensive than your other skincare, either because the formula sits on the skin for long periods of time (like a facial mask) or because the product is made with ingredients that are too powerful to be used daily—such as our Doctor's Visit Instant Resurfacing Mask.
The Best Facial Masks and Skin Treatments
Depending on the type of tool or ingredients used, skincare treatments can deliver results for dullness, acne, dryness, aging skin, and more. To find the best facial treatment for you, consider your skin type. Acne-prone or dull? Look for clay masks (like Find Clarity Purifying Mask or Photos, Please Brightening Tightening Mask) to unclog pores and exfoliate away dead skin cells. Feeling dry? A soothing gel formula, such as Look Alive Hydrating Plumping Mask, can restore thirsty skin. If you’re sensitive and prone to redness, irritation, or inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, use skin treatments sparingly (think 1-4x per month) and opt for gentler, pH-balanced formulas, such as The Shortcut Overnight Facial. You can also consider performing a patch test (apply a small amount to your neck) to see how your skin reacts.
How to Apply Skin Treatments and Masks
How often you should use these skincare treatments will depend on the specific product. Always check the back of the packaging to make sure you’re not overdoing it, which can only make existing skin conditions worse. As a general rule of thumb, apply facial masks 1-3x per week and use facial peels or an At-Home Dermaplaning Tool 1x per week in place of exfoliating. Acne facial treatments and spot creams can cover pimples, breakouts, and maskne whenever they pop up.
Most masks and tools should be used after washing your face and applying toner but before serums and moisturizers. Spot treatments, on the other hand, should be applied between moisturizer and sunscreen. If a product contains an active ingredient such as retinol or AHAs, apply during your PM routine to avoid any sun exposure. If you’d prefer to use during the AM, just make sure you’re using ample sunscreen to protect your skin from damage.
